Biobank Collection & Accessioning Lead - CVM

The Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine seeks a Medical Technologist to join the Biobank team. The successful candidate will serve as Collection and Accession Lead at the Cornell Veterinary Biobank (CVB) at the Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine, and will play an integral role in the advanced analysis, processing, and handling of biological specimens. This role involves sensitive client communication on sample donation, informed consent, and euthanasia, requiring clarity, empathy, and cultural competence. The position demands emotional intelligence, resilience, and adaptability in a diverse and dynamic academic environment, contributing significantly to research and diagnostic objectives.


The job responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Sample Collection and Processing:
  • Precise handling and processing of various biological samples, including blood, blood derivatives, tissue, and animal carcasses.
  • Utilization of centrifuges, pipettors, EMR software, and other laboratory tools for accurate sample traceability.
  • Ensuring adherence to safety protocols, ethical guidelines and aseptic technique during sample collection and processing.
  • Data Management and Analysis:
  • Accession samples into Biobank Information Management Software
  • Detailed record-keeping and data manipulation for research and diagnostic purposes.
  • Efficient extraction and analysis of relevant information from biological samples.
  • Writing and updating Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) in line with ISO standards.
  • Communication and Team Collaboration:
  • Building and maintaining productive relationships with clinical and technical staff, collaborators and external partners.
  • Communicating effectively and competently with clients regarding sensitive topics like sample donation, informed consent, and euthanasia, ensuring clarity and empathy.
  • Laboratory Operations:
  • Routine operation of laboratory equipment in accordance with aseptic techniques.
  • Management of liquid nitrogen and ultra-low temperature equipment and materials.
  • Regular transportation of samples across different sites using their own transportation means.
  • Professional Development and Compliance:
  • Continuous improvement in technical skills, including phlebotomy and animal handling.
  • Adherence to laboratory SOPs, ISO standards, and quality improvement practices.
  • Undertaking tasks beyond the technical job description as required.
  • Working effectively with quickly shifting priorities, demonstrating resilience in a fast-paced and demanding work environment.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field with a minimum of 2 years of experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience in collecting and processing biological samples in a hospital or research setting.
  • Valid driver's license and personal vehicle for sample transportation.
  • Proficiency in operating laboratory equipment and computer systems for data management.
  • Ability to handle biohazardous materials (e.g. liquid nitrogen) and equipment (e.g. ultra-low temperature freezers)

Preferred Qualifications

  • 3-4 years of experience in animal handling and phlebotomy.
  • NY state veterinary technician license or license eligible
  • Experience in a biobank or similar research environment, with an understanding of the specific demands of such settings.
  • Proficiency in handling or working with centrifuges, liquid nitrogen, -80C freezers, blood and tissue samples including postmortem samples.
  • Familiarity and compliance with standard operating procedures for quality and biobank processes based on ISO 20387

Important Details about the Position

  • This is an onsite position located in Ithaca, NY.
  • This is a full-time one-year term position with potential for extension contingent upon funding and performance.
  • We are unable to provide Visa sponsorship, now or in the future, for this position.
